newport part one: green animals
day trips are my absolute favorite way to spend a fall weekend. and luckily boston has an endless number of cute sites and towns just a short drive away. this weekend we decided to check out newport which is a charming seaside city in rhode island that’s well known for its impressive summer homes (read: huuuuge mansions) of the most rich and influential families in american history.
before the short hour and a half drive from natick, i had a slice of yoga bread and cottage cheese for breakfast, and packed some snacks for the road.
first stop: green animals topiary gardens!
green animals topiary garden is a charming country estate located in portsmouth, ri. the garden is owned by the newport preservation society and one of their “newport mansions” that are open to the public. it is also the oldest topiary garden in the US.
i absolutely loved visiting the topiary garden. there are so many things to see and explore including a veggie garden, flower beds, fruit trees, and of course the giant topiary animals! there was a fall festival going on which was really cute and brought a lot of families out. we walked enjoyed the gardens, browsed the small museum and had a picnic lunch on the huge lawn that overlooked the bay.
