give peas a chance

April 3, 2009

when i first moved in with tommy and started cooking for him, i learned that he has a long list of vegetables he doesn’t like. at first, this really frustrated me, as he hadn’t even tried half the veggies on his list, but eventually i took it on as sort of a challenge.

it’s been a year now and although i don’t let him know it, i’m quite happy with his progress. some of the veggies i’ve gotten him to clear on his plate include: green beans, asparagus, sprouts, pumpkin, brussels sprouts, zucchini and today…peas!

yesterday, we watched this dvd that i borrowed from the library: good eats with alton brown: veggie eats 3. tom is a big alton brown fan and actually expressed interest in trying the dishes in the episode. the “give peas a chance” segment was an exorcist spoof where alton is called in to get a kid to eat his peas, so it was the perfect vegetable to start with.

i plan on making all three recipes in the peas segment in the week to come. today we started with the green peas with cheese and herbs.

i’m not gonna lie and say he loved them, but he ate them without complaint! with vegetables, it’s either he will tolerate them and eat his portion or hate it and refuse to finish it. i liked ’em though. i mean, what’s not to like about peas and cheese, right? the marinade was just like a vinaigrette, this would be a nice side dish for the summer.

i also grilled some red potatoes on the george and had those along with a chickpea patty that i made a while ago.

here’s my plate. i had a second helping of the peas.

for dessert, i had some jelly beans.

okay fine, i had a handful of chocolate chips too. i thought about taking a re-enactment picture, but i’m afraid i’d just pop those in my mouth too…so you’ll just have to imagine it.

hope you guys are having a great friday night! i have a low key weekend ahead, and i’m looking forward to trying out some new recipes, and maybe even a little baking!
