cruise recap day one: cape canaveral
after a relaxing weekend in orlando, tommy and i were more than ready to board our royal caribbean cruise! on monday, we drove to cape canaveral, had breakfast, and returned our rental car.
i ate a nectarine and tom had dunkin’ donuts (although he vowed not to eat/drink DD while on vacation since he has it everyday at work!)
we took a free shuttle from dollar and arrived at port canaveral around noon.
there were already a lot of people at the port but the embarkation process was quick and easy peasy- i was worried that it’d be complicated, but it was just like checking into a flight…
once on the monarch of the seas, we signed up for our excursions, tom bought an unlimited coke card, and we hit up the buffet at the windjammer cafe.
the buffet wasn’t as impressive as i was expecting…i thought there would be more ethnic and vegetarian options (those may just have been in another dining area.) the salad bar didn’t have as much variety as i was hoping for either. still, there was plenty to eat and i was always able to find healthy foods (although i didn’t always opt for them!)
for my first trip to the buffet, i chose paella with mussels, bean sprouts, tuna nicoise salad, and a green salad.
since it was only the first day and we were still at port, i skipped out on dessert. it wasn’t easy- fruit tarts are my favorite! but i knew that we’d meet again soon enough 🙂
after lunch, we went to our stateroom (6015– same floor as the casino– uh oh!), put our carry-on bags away and explored the ship. we were so excited to be on our first cruise! we ran from floor to floor and room to room checking everything out. we took a tour of the spa, gym, attended random raffles and giveaways, demonstrations…everything!
(next time we’re sitting front & center at these things cus they like to throw free stuff out to the audience!)
we took a short “break” for the required muster drill…it was hot and humid outside so we were thankful that we weren’t required to wear life jackets…but can i just say sometimes it really sucks being at armpit level?
after the muster drill, we went over to the fitness center for a raffle (i was ONE number way from winning a spa treatment! so sad!) and to sign up for a couple classes.
after we checked everything out…it was probably still only 5 or 6PM…and we had worked up an appetite. tom and i choose the late seating for dinner (8:30PM) which gave us plenty of time to return to the ship and get ready for dinner on port days but on at sea days it was hard to wait so long to eat and we always hit up the buffet for a snack. maybe if i had chosen an earlier seating for dinner, i could have shaved a couple calories?
for my first day’s afternoon snack, i had half a chicken salad sandwich on a wheat roll and a yummy pear. there was always plenty of fresh fruit around the ship.
then i finally got into vacation mode and relaxed a bit by the pool…
