cruise recap day two: cococay, bahamas

September 8, 2009

the first stop of our cruise was cococay which is royal caribbean’s private bahamian island. despite our previous late night of dancing, the white sand and warm waters that awaited us were more than enough motivation to give us an early start. i also signed up for yoga on the beach, and we had to meet our group at 8:30AM to take a tender to the island together.

i ate breakfast from the buffet at the windjammer cafe before meeting the yoga group.

plain yogurt topped with cheerios and raisins and a side of fruit.

our group of yogis was very diverse with lots of first timers and husbands that were dragged along…it made for a surprisingly fun yoga experience.

i envisioned doing yoga right in the sand with a view of the ocean but the spot we ended up doing it in was much more practical– under the trees and in the shade.

we used two beach towels to make our mats…

it started off a bit silly as the men were groaning, giggling…and farting…but eventually everyone got into it.

it felt so nice to stretch my muscles after a few days of traveling and there was something very empowering about doing warrior poses under the open sky. the heat helped me work up a nice sweat and i felt rejuvenated afterwards. yoga on the beach was one of my favorite experiences of the cruise.

(i’m wearing the pure bar shirt i won from iowa girl’s giveaway, thanks kristin!)

after yoga, tom and i checked out our options for the day…we had until about 4PM to hang out on the island.

i had a bite of this pure bar (also from the giveaway) while weighing my options…

i decided to rent a floating mat and tommy opted to rent snorkel equipment.

unfortunately when we went in the water we found out it was jellyfish season! it really felt like we were in the jellyfish scene in finding nemo…they were everywhere 😦 it wasn’t too bad for me though since most of my body stayed on top of the water on the floating mat (although i had to lay rigid, or else parts of the mat would sink in the water) but poor tommy was not happy being in the ocean! we decided to give it a break and check out the lunch buffet instead…

blackbeard’s grille featured a beach front bbq with the usual suspects…burgers, sausages, ribs, bbq chicken…

i got some fruit:

salad(s), corn, and a small piece of bbq chicken (which was really good- wish i had picked a bigger piece!)

for dessert, i had a bite of rum cake (thought it was going to be chocolate!) and half an oatmeal raisin cookie (i threw away half of the cookie after the pic cus i thought i was going to be eating chocolate cake! darn!)

we explored the island a bit (as much as the heat would allow) to digest after lunch…

the iguanas were huge and know exactly when lunchtime on the island is!

healthy & sweet 🙂

we actually debated going back to the ship early because of the jellyfish but decided to give the water another try. this time it was a success! i floated on my stomach and waded out into deeper water where there were less jellyfish and floated for what seemed like hours. and after my butt was thoroughly burnt to a crisp i hung out on my beach chair…it was the perfect way to relax and the weather couldn’t have been better.
