thanks asian food grocer!

October 14, 2009

i got my asian food grocer package last week and i finally put some of the products to use today!

this is what i ordered with the gift certificate i received through the foodbuzz tastemaker program:

i had to fight the urge to order $30 worth of pocky and hello kitty snacks but i still came out with lots of goodies.

thanks foodbuzz and asian food grocer!

but before i get to the asian-y stuff, my morning was juice-y. actually, there’s an asian pear in there…so i guess breakfast was asian too 🙂

you can kinda see red flecks from the strawberries

i had more veggies for lunch: una ensalada con curry rubbed tofu, honeycrisp manzana, cebolla roja, y bell pepper…how awesome is my high school espanol?

i used one of my AFG products for the tofu rub: s&b curry powder…i can’t wait to make curry with this stuff…it smells SO good!

i also crumbled a couple of these spicy shrimp chips over the salad cus i’m just crazy like that 🙂

muy delicioso!

dinner was a new favorite of mine: super duper easy peasy maki!

i know they’re ugly…i don’t have a sushi mat (should have gotten one on AFG!) or sushi knife but despite that these are SO easy to make- especially with the help of microwave brown rice. sorry to the sushi purists who are shuddering right now…

to make sushi rice you just add some rice wine vinegar, sugar, and salt. i also add a dash of mirin just cus i have it around but that’s not necessary. mix the seasonings into the rice while it’s still warm and then let it cool down before you spread it on the nori. (the nori goes shiny side down- i had to look that up on the internetz to make sure)

for the filling, i flaked some leftover salmon and mixed it up with another AFG goodie: japanese kewpie mayo (i felt like a fatass for ordering mayo but the japanese kind is so freakin’ yummy) and some sriracha. i got this idea from annie’s poor girl spicy tuna.

so to make a the maki, spread the rice on the bottom half of the nori, add fillings of your choice, roll it up and you’re ready to eat!

and for dessert: kasugai gummies! these gummies have the yummiest flavors- best gummies ever and they “come in an attractive small bag.” gotta love the engrish 🙂

Ooo the Japanese mayo.. I’ve seen that in stores but I never got it because the packaging was strange to me lol. But I guess it makes sense to squeeze it out.
