sangria, guac and birthday cake

October 21, 2009

last night was muy divertido. i had a little sangria party at zocalo thanks to a gift certificate i won on a twitter contest (isn’t the internets amazing!?)

zocalo is an authentic mexican restaurant in allston/brighton. i actually lived across the street from it before moving out to the ‘burbs so i have been to it a few times. their food is alright (and you know i love mexican food!) but their sangria is muccccch better.

we started with guacamole, which is made fresh table side. they use a huge mortar and pestle to mash up avocados and a whole mess of other ingredients like onions, peppers, tomatoes, lime juice, etc…

nay said the guac tasted tangy and i have to agree…they put so much stuff in it that it starts to mask that wonderful buttery taste of avocado. my perfect guacamole is just straight up avocado and some salt.

but you know i still did some serious damage…their guac costs almost $9 and there was no way i was leaving any of it behind. the pestle was the size of my big asian head so needless to say i left the restaurant stuffed!

i also ate a side of plantains…

(sorry horrible pictures! it was really dark and i couldn’t decide if flash on or off was better!)

and finally- the sangria! we ordered two pitchers. tom couldn’t drink much since he was driving, so nay and i basically drank a pitcher each…best way to spend a tuesday night if you ask me.

omg. look at tom’s ghost to the right. creepy.

okay, sorry…better pic:

good times.

afterwards we went home and there was cake.
